This generation is told “freedom is coming”. Twenty two years ago we were told “freedom has arrived, we are now free”.
We were given a new constitution which carried the spirit of the freedom charter. We were asked to pledge our allegiance to these two documents which purportedly gave written confirmation of our freedom. We are consistently reminded that the SA constitution is the most progressive in the world!!!!…!!!!..!!..!
We hear that SA is now rated the most unequal country in the world. Still we are told that the freedom charter and the constitution will protect us.
We are told that our political leaders have agreed to have over 80% of SA privatized and owned by White capital. We are not worried, our constitution and freedom charter will protect us.
We are told parliament passes laws to protect private business in SA – not to protect the rights of the black majority. We are not worried, our constitution and freedom charter will protect us.
We are told the legal system is controlled by the white private sector and therefore private white business and white monopoly capital in general can do as they please. We are not worried, our constitution and freedom charter will protect us.
We believe that these documents will magically save us to the end of time. We hang onto the freedoms it says we have and deserve. We ignore the fact that it also says that private white corporations and white families that in reality keep all the wealth and power in SA don’t need to share that wealth. It’s like having two kids (let’s assume for argument sake that both are boys) – one has access to and control over all the wealth, resources and power for both of them, the other kid has nothing! You then tell the poor child that he has access to, everything the heart desires, to be whomever he wants to become, to do whatever he wants to do, to full protection, to wealth, to power – but in reality this child lives in a shack barely able to feed himself because his brother was given TOTAL POWER over him through having TOTAL CONTROL over the wealth, resources, power.
This is what the constitution and the freedom charter does. They both tell us that we all have the right to enjoy good lives. They both tell us that we all have access to jobs, money, power, protection, housing, electricity. BUT it leaves the power to all our wealth, resources and power in the hands of white monopoly capital – the white families and businesses that ruled SA during apartheid.
There’s no freedom in this, it’s more of a sick joke. It’s like dangling a carrot in front of a rabbit with no intention of actually feeding it.
The constitution and freedom charter promises us the world but leaves the power to our freedom (lock and key) in the hands of vile capitalist racist gangsters, who have absolutely no intention of sharing what they’ve stolen, leave alone returning it to the rightful owners!
