The the office of the public protector has been given money by the treasury to fast track investigation on the Gupta businesses. Complaints of “state capture” have been laid by the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Catholic church.
In a move that seems to confirm the accusation that the current public protector prioritizes complaints laid by the DA against black people, the recent ‘state capture’ complaint is being given priority over more than 4000 complaints some of which have been gathering dust for many years.
The Black First Land First (BLF) movement also laid ‘state capture’ complaints in March this year with the public protector but against white capital and not the Guptas. The complaint has been completely ignored. BLF has recently written to the public protector’s office asking for feedback, again there has been no response at all.
Prioritising the Gupta investigation against the almost five year old complaint of R26 billion stolen from the reserve bank by white capital including Johann Rupert and his father Anton Rupert doesn’t make sense. The so-called CIEX report has gone under ground again. Last year BLF staged a sit in at the head quarters of the public protector in Pretoria and also disrupted her speech at the Desmond Tutu Peace lecture in Cape Town demanding progress on the CIEX investigation. The public protector then promised to settle the investigation by the end of 2015. To date nothing has happened.
Investigating ‘state capture’ by the Guptas while excluding similar complaints laid to her office against white capital shows how biased Thuli Madonsela is in favour of white capital. The finance minister is also known to be anti the Guptas because of their alleged closeness to President Jacob Zuma.
The investigation into the Guptas runs the risk of being seen as a vendetta against Zuma. The only way the public protector can get out of such an accusation is if she was to include the complaints of state capture by white capital in her investigation.
Indications are that Madonsela will leave office in October having duck and dived wrong doing by white capital.
