On Monday the National Assembly in Nicaragua passed the “Law for the defense of people’s rights to independence, sovereignty, and self-determination for peace.” To this end those who go against the independence of the country – by leading or financing a coup, for instance – will lose their right to be elected to public office.
The decision is a strong warning from President Daniel Ortega to opposition leaders calling for Washington to impose sanctions on Nicaragua and its people.
